Purpose is a fundamental human need that contributes to greater well-being. It can enhance sleep, mood, and longevity, as well as cognition—with studies showing that a positive sense of purpose can reduce cognitive decline by as much as 50% and the risk for Alzheimer’s by 2.4-fold.

Finding purpose and meaning in one’s work can often lead to elevated job satisfaction. Employers that value purpose and recognize it as part of company culture can often inspire engagement and resilience among employees and foster a shared commitment to delivering high-quality care that makes a positive difference in the lives of patients and workers alike.

Here are steps healthcare workers can take to find purpose in their work and understand how their individual roles connect to the bigger picture.

Begin With Self-Reflection

Many who pursue a career in medicine often do so to fulfill an important need or calling and to create a sense of purpose. A great way for employees to find a renewed sense of purpose in their work is to remember why they chose their profession in the first place. Self-reflection and self-awareness can help rekindle the passion to help others and help employees tackle their roles with more drive and enthusiasm.

Revisit Core Values

Values can be evaluated on both an individual and company-wide level to help employees connect their work with a sense of purpose. Revisiting company values can remind employers and employees alike of what everyone is working together to accomplish. Many times, values can play an important role in reigniting the passion for practicing medicine and serving the community.

Focusing on values such as empathy, compassion, and integrity can often make work far more fulfilling and provide insights into one’s purpose. Employers can also look for ways to offer their employees meaningful work that aligns with their individual core values.

Celebrate Milestones, Big and Small

Recognizing and celebrating even the smallest of milestones can go a long way toward reinforcing motivation and a sense of purpose among employees. Praise, incentives, and team gatherings can all be fun, positive, and healthy ways to acknowledge and celebrate individual and team accomplishments.

Focus on Individual Growth

Supporting career growth is another great way to help employees find purpose in their work, as it can help them become more confident, motivated, and engaged. Career growth often goes hand in hand with personal growth and empowers employees to take greater pride in their roles as healthcare workers. On-site training and mentorship programs are some of the many ways to spur individual growth in a healthcare organization.

Find Ways to Combat Burnout

Healthcare workers are often at higher risk of experiencing burnout than workers in other industries. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), burnout is defined as “a high degree of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization” and a low sense of accomplishment at work. HHS adds that burnout is often a workplace issue that can be resolved with systems-oriented and organizational-level solutions.

In 2022, an estimated 46% of healthcare workers reported feeling burned out on a regular basis. Burnout carries the risk of anxiety and depression and may also compromise one’s ability to deliver quality patient care. It may also cause employees to fall out of touch with their sense of purpose.

Maintaining adequate staffing levels, offering flexible work hours, and providing counseling and mindfulness services to employees are some actions employers can take to effectively combat burnout. Research suggests that peer support can also help fight burnout, as it can make employees feel more connected to their coworkers and establish a sense of community.

It is important to keep in mind that sometimes, finding one’s purpose can be an ongoing, lifelong journey that evolves over time with new experiences. Embracing the journey and encouraging others to do the same can often lead to greater pride and satisfaction at work.
